Miyamoto Laboratory at the University of Tokyo studies planetary science, Solar System exploration and space resources. We investigate the geology and geophysics of solid bodies—including the Moon, Mars and asteroids—and connect this knowledge with exploration and resource utilization.
From planetary science to technology and society
Planetary surfaces preserve clues to the formation and evolution of worlds. We combine spacecraft images and observations with experiments using analogue materials and numerical modelling. We also develop instruments and analytical methods relevant to subsurface exploration and resource assessment.
Education across science and engineering
Students are affiliated primarily with the Department of Systems Innovation in the Graduate School of Engineering or the Department of Earth and Planetary Science in the Graduate School of Science. Research directions develop through discussion, taking each student’s interests and strengths into account.
A collaborative research environment
We work with the Center for Space Resources and Innovation (CSRI) at the University of Tokyo and with universities, research institutions and industry in Japan and internationally.
